Dry wells: an autobiographical account of a petroleum engineer

I was standing in the que for the varsity medical examination unaware of the future (mis) adventures and dreaming about the life ahead when suddenly my turn came and I passed the medical examination. The next day I had to select an engineering discipline from a cluster of 17 unique departments at the NED University. Every student aspires to get an admission in a prestigious institution, but in his obsession to get admitted to a university he/she fails to assess the value of the discipline of his choice. I selected Petroleum Engineering as my father wished me to opt for it. It is different from other disciplines and usually unrelated to them. Here you measure reservoir permeability and porosity instead of shear force and torque (in the mechanical engineering). It was a modest batch of 50 students (modest as compared to the batches in the other departments). We were all very excited through the first year and then dark clouds began to gather over us as the industry face...

Despicable Hitler?

Napoleon once said: History is the version of the past events that people have decided to agree upon. Adolf Hitler, the so called worst dictator of all times has also been victimized by the historians and chroniclers. It is true that he was an autocratic ruler, he was a war monger and his actions led to massive destruction not only in Europe but throughout the globe. He was not the only one to do so, his predecessors from the civilized world and from the great democracies have also committed same crimes but, as they were victors, no one blames them for their acts of maintaining the civilized order of the world. To this day the media including the print and the electronic media portray the Nazis as a band of psychopaths who first captured Europe and then unleashed their reign of terror, conducted the genocide of the European Jews known as the holocaust and in the end were defeated by the Allies. No one says that Nazi rivals committed all those crimes that were committed by them d...

MBA

Getting a respectable job these days has become the most arduous task. One has to undergo several difficult phases in order to get a proper job. The prospect of engineering more specifically petroleum engineering are fading at an alarming rate. The safest thing an engineer can do is to opt for an MBA degree. In order to get an MBA degree, the first step is to secure an admission at a university. In Karachi, you have a number of choices on your platter, but there the factors of cost and recognition narrow down the options. If you reside in Karachi, an MBA from the IBA is an ideal one as far as affordability and recognition is concerned. PREPARING FOR THE TEST  The road to the IBA is not a walk in the park and a candidate has to prepare properly for it. The recommended books for preparation are; SAT I for BBA and GMAT for the MBA program. Once you clear the test, which most of the candidates easily do, you have to appear for an interview, which is the deciding factor for th...
